Travel medicine
For people arriving in Egypt, people leaving it, and people who are ill somewhere in between.
Travel medicine is the core of what I do. Sharm El-Sheikh receives visitors from Europe, Russia, the Gulf and Asia, and sends Egyptians to Hajj and Umrah, to Europe and Africa for work, and increasingly on holiday. Each direction has its own risks, and most of them are preventable with a conversation a few weeks before you fly.
Before you travel
A pre-travel consultation, ideally 4–6 weeks before departure (later is still worth it). We cover:
- Destination risk assessment — where you're going, for how long, doing what, and your own health and medications
- Vaccinations — hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus-diphtheria-polio booster, rabies for long or rural trips, meningococcal ACWY (required for Hajj and Umrah), yellow fever for parts of Africa and South America, Japanese encephalitis, cholera, influenza, and routine catch-up (MMR, varicella)
- Malaria — whether you need prevention, which tablets suit you, and bite avoidance
- Travellers' diarrhoea — prevention, and a standby treatment plan so you don't lose days of your trip
- Altitude, diving, heat and cold — specific advice for trekking, diving trips, desert and winter destinations
- Chronic conditions and travel — insulin and medication across time zones, DVT risk on long flights, oxygen and fitness to fly
- A written travel health plan and a personalised medical kit list
While you're in Sharm El-Sheikh
If you fall ill on holiday, I see visitors in the clinic or at their hotel and coordinate with travel insurers. The common problems here are gastroenteritis, respiratory infections, ear and sinus problems from diving and swimming, sun and heat illness, and injuries — most are straightforward when treated early. I also see visitors who need routine care while away: a blood pressure check, a repeat prescription, a blood test their doctor asked for.
After you get home
Fever, persistent diarrhoea or a rash after travel needs a doctor who asks where you've been. I offer video consultations for post-travel symptoms, and can send a summary to your own doctor. Yellow fever and vaccination certificates
International Certificates of Vaccination (the "yellow card") for yellow fever and meningococcal vaccination are issued through authorised centres; I can advise which vaccines you need, administer those available in the clinic, and direct you to the nearest authorised yellow fever centre where required.
